Hail to the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge

Buff & Blue Fund Challenge

On Thursday, January 5, GW men’s basketball hosted their Atlantic 10 home opener and the Department of Athletics and Recreation tipped-off the annual Buff & Blue Fund Challenge.

In its third year, the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge is now two challenges in one: a student-athlete alumni team challenge and a fans and families challenge.

Team Challenge

All our lives we’ll be proud to say, “We hail from GW!”

The Team Challenge calls for alumni of each GW varsity athletics team to give back monetarily to their program. The team with the highest alumni participation rate when the Challenge ends on Homecoming will be named the 2017 Buff & Blue Fund Challenge Champions and take the top prize of $8,000. Second and third place will earn $6,000 and $4,000, respectively, while the Most Improved team will receive $2,000 for their program.

The team challenge is made possible thanks to the generosity of Michelle Rubin, ESIA BA ’91, chair of the GW Athletics Advisory Council. “I get more out of it than I give to it,” said Rubin. “That’s what they say about philanthropy: The more you give, the more you get. I do what I can. I’d love to do more, all the time.”

Fans and Families Challenge

Oh, by George we’re happy we can say, “We’re GW, here to show the way!”

For every 100 donors to the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge, the GW Athletics Advisory Council will give $10,000 to the Buff & Blue Fund. The money raised will provide unrestricted support for facility upgrades and enhance GW’s commitment to providing the best resources and collegiate experience to its students.

“I’m grateful to all of our fans for supporting champions in competition, in the classroom, in the community,” said Patrick Nero, Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Your philanthropic support helps us to provide the best resources, opportunities to achieve excellence, and highest quality experiences for our student-athletes.”

With more than 300 donors, the inaugural Buff & Blue Fund Challenge raised more than $80,000. Last year’s student-athlete Challenge saw the number of donors and dollars double (more than 600 and $155,000, respectively). Will the dual Challenges outperform them all? Gymnastics repeat as champions? Who will win Most Improved?

All gifts through Homecoming on February 11 count toward the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge.
