The university publicly launched Making History: The Campaign for GW at George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon Estate on June 20. With a goal of raising $1 billion by June 30, 2018, Making History is the most ambitious philanthropic effort in the university’s nearly 200-year history.
The launch event, underwritten by anonymous gifts to celebrate the beginning of GW’s historic undertaking, included a special challenge coin ceremony and remarks from President Steven Knapp, Board of Trustees Chairman Nelson A. Carbonell Jr., BS ’85, and the Honorable B.J. Penn, MS ’80, inaugural chair of the campaign.
“The Making History campaign would make George Washington proud. It is moving forward the institution that he first envisioned,” said Mr. Penn, a former trustee who studied at GW while serving in the U.S. Navy. “Helping our students, helping our faculty, making a difference in the world – that’s what the ‘making history’ part of this campaign is going to be.”
Making History, which began with a quiet phase in July 2011 and has raised more than $525 million to date, focuses on three core areas that will benefit students and faculty across all of the university’s schools, colleges, and programs:
Making History will strengthen GW’s commitment to its students by providing financial aid to make a GW education accessible to a broader group of extraordinary students, allocating significant funds to enhance student and career services, and modernizing space for student organizations and clubs.
Support for the campaign will enable the university to further the mission of every school and college at GW, hire and retain renowned faculty members to educate and inspire our students, and fund innovative, cross-disciplinary academic endeavors.
Break New Ground
In addition to completing capital projects on GW’s campuses, Making History will enable GW to fund groundbreaking research that tackles our society’s most challenging issues, from hunger and disease to national security and sustainability.
The $1 billion campaign will enable the George Washington University to generate breakthroughs that affect millions of lives, partner with influential organizations around the world, and provide GW students with the resources and opportunities to make history. The partnership and support of thousands of George Washington alumni, faculty and staff, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations will lead to incredible, positive changes for every facet of life at GW.
“Making History will mean different things to different people, but at the center of it is the importance of making a difference,” says Steve Frenkil, BS ’74, president of the GW Alumni Association. “Your contribution to the campaign, and the contribution of your time to GW, will make a difference in people’s lives and make a difference in GW’s ability to change the world.”
